What is a 20 yard dumpster used for?
A 20 yard roll off holds about 20 cubic yards of debris, or 6 to 8 pickup truck loads. It is the right size for a full floor remodel, a large garage or basement cleanout, a deck tear off, or roughly 2,500 square feet of asphalt shingles. What are the dimensions and weight limits?
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Length | 20 ft |
| Width | 8 ft |
| Wall height | 4.5 ft |
| Capacity | 20 cubic yards |
| Pickup truck loads | 6 to 8 |
| Typical weight included | 2 to 4 tons, varies by provider |
| Driveway space needed | 60 ft including the truck |
Why is this the default size?
Two measurements make the 20 yard the standard. The footprint is close to the 10 yard, so driveway fit is rarely the deciding factor. And the walls are 4.5 feet, low enough that one person can lift drywall and lumber over the side without a ramp.
That is why contractors default to it for interior demolition. Anything taller slows loading down, and anything shorter means a second haul on a job of any size.
What fits in 20 cubic yards?
A complete floor of remodel debris: drywall, trim, flooring, cabinetry and the old fixtures. Or a garage and basement cleared at the same time. Or about 2,500 square feet of asphalt shingles, which covers a typical single storey roof.
The honest test is pickup loads. Six to eight full beds is the equivalent, and most people underestimate by about a third when they eyeball a pile.
When should you size up or down?
Size down to a 10 yard if the material is heavy. Concrete, brick, dirt and asphalt reach the truck’s legal road weight long before 20 cubic yards is full, and providers will not transport it.
Size up to a 30 yard if the debris is light and bulky. Furniture, mattresses, cardboard and insulation fill volume without adding weight, and the extra six feet of wall height on a 30 yard costs less than a second haul.
What does the price actually cover?
A quote should be one number covering delivery, the rental period, collection and disposal up to a stated weight. Extra days are normally a flat daily rate. Extra tonnage is billed at the local disposal rate, commonly $50 to $125 per ton.
Overage is the charge people do not plan for. If the container includes 3 tons and you load 4, that is a real bill on top of the quote. Describe the material honestly when you call and the allowance will be set correctly from the start.
How full can you load it?
Level with the top rail, no higher. Anything above the rail cannot be legally tarped for transport, and the driver will either refuse the load or charge to level it before lifting.
Load heavy material first and spread it across the floor rather than piling it at one end. An unevenly loaded container is harder to winch onto the truck and occasionally cannot be collected at all.
How does booking work?
Call with your ZIP and debris list
We connect you with a local provider. Describe the material honestly so the weight allowance is right.
Confirm price, dates and placement
The provider quotes the all in total and tells you what the site needs to look like on delivery day.
Load it, then call for pickup
Keep debris level with the top rail. Call when you are done or let the rental period run out.
What does it cost?
| Market type | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Major metro | $400 to $700 |
| Mid size city | $350 to $600 |
| Small town or rural | $320 to $550 |
Going over the included weight is the most common extra charge. Expect roughly $50 to $125 per extra ton, depending on the local landfill rate.
What can you put in it?
Usually accepted
Household junk, furniture and mattresses
Drywall, lumber, trim and flooring
Asphalt shingles, in a heavy debris container
Yard waste, branches and sod
Appliances with the refrigerant already removed
Carpet, padding and cabinetry
Not accepted
Paint, solvents, fuel and motor oil
Tires and vehicle batteries
Asbestos and other regulated materials
Propane tanks and pressurized cylinders
Medical waste and chemicals
Electronics in states that ban them from landfills
Accepted material varies by landfill and by provider. Confirm your list on the call before the container is dropped.
Where should the container sit?
Protect the surface. Put plywood under the wheels and the rear roller. A loaded 20 yard container can exceed 10 tons, and that weight sits on four small contact points.
The truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach, 10.5 feet of width and 23 feet of overhead clearance. Low branches, carports and utility lines are the usual obstacles. Keep cars clear of the drop zone, and tell the driver which way you want the barn doors to face.

20 Yard Dumpster questions
How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?
About 6 to 8 full size pickup truck loads. If you are planning more than two or three trips to the transfer station, a 20 yard container is usually cheaper and faster.
Will a 20 yard dumpster fit in my driveway?
Normally yes. It needs roughly 60 feet of length including room for the truck, and about 10.5 feet of width. Two car driveways almost always work.
How much weight is included?
Most providers include 2 to 4 tons on a 20 yard container, but it varies. Confirm the included tonnage and the per ton overage rate on the call.
Can I put a roof tear off in a 20 yard?
Yes, up to about 2,500 square feet of asphalt shingles. Shingles are dense, so ask for a heavy debris rated container and expect a tonnage based quote.
Can I mix concrete in with my remodel debris?
No. Concrete, brick and dirt have to go in a dedicated heavy debris container. Mixing them means the load gets rejected or surcharged.
Why is the 20 yard the most popular size?
It is the largest container that still fits a normal residential driveway, and its 4.5 foot walls are low enough to load by hand. That combination covers most home projects.
