What porta potty sizes are available?

Portable restrooms come in six common types: standard, deluxe flushable, ADA accessible, luxury restroom trailer, hand wash station and construction site unit. A standard unit is about 43 inches wide, 47 inches deep and 92 inches tall, and most types share that footprint. The ADA unit and the trailer are the exceptions, because both need interior turning space. Call 1-833-520-0680 for availability in your ZIP.

Each unit type explained

How often each unit is serviced

Servicing means the tank pumped, the unit washed down and paper restocked.
UseFrequencyWhat happens
Job site, up to 10 workers per unitWeeklyTank pumped, unit washed, paper restocked
Job site, more than 10 workers per unitTwice weeklyAlso the norm in summer heat
Long term rental, light useWeeklyStandard on monthly contracts
Short event, under one dayDelivered clean, collected afterNo mid event service unless requested
Multi day festivalNightlyOvernight servicing between sessions

Servicing frequency is driven by use, not by the calendar. A unit serving a crew of fifteen fills roughly twice as fast as the weekly interval assumes, which is why job sites above ten workers per unit are normally put on a twice weekly schedule from the start.

Placement checklist

  • Allow about 5 ft by 5 ft per standard unit, including door swing
  • Keep the service truck within about 25 ft to avoid long carry charges
  • Put units on level, firm ground, never on a slope or soft fill
  • Face doors away from the main entrance and from food service
  • Site ADA units on a flat, step free route from the event area
  • Allow power and a level pad for a restroom trailer

How many units do you need?

Unit type and unit count are separate questions. On a job site the count comes from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, which sets one facility for up to twenty workers and one toilet seat per forty workers above that. At an event the usual planning rule is one unit per fifty guests over a four hour window, with more added for longer events and where alcohol is served.

Accessible provision is its own requirement. The ADA 2010 Standards apply wherever an event is open to the public, and the usual approach is at least one accessible unit and one per twenty thereafter.

Porta potty size questions

What size is a standard porta potty?

About 43 inches wide, 47 inches deep and 92 inches tall, on a 60 gallon tank. That is the common build across the main manufacturers, so a unit from one provider will be close to a unit from another.

How much space do I need for a unit?

Allow about a foot of clearance on each side for the door swing and for servicing, so roughly 5 feet by 5 feet per standard unit. A trailer needs a level pad the length of the trailer plus towing access.

How big is an ADA accessible unit?

About 62 inches square and 88 inches tall. The extra footprint is the turning circle a wheelchair needs inside, and the unit sits at ground level with no step at the door.

How many people does one unit serve?

A standard unit is planned for about 100 uses between service visits. For events that is usually one unit per 50 guests over a four hour window; on job sites the figure comes from the OSHA table instead.

How often are units serviced?

Weekly is standard on a monthly hire, rising to twice weekly above ten workers per unit or in summer heat. Multi day events are usually serviced overnight between sessions.

Do I need a trailer or will standard units do?

Standard units are fine wherever function is the point. A trailer earns its cost when guests are dressed for an occasion, when the event runs long enough that comfort matters, or where there is no reasonable alternative indoors.
