Short answer
Weekly servicing is the job site standard and covers about 10 users per unit. Move to twice weekly above that, or in sustained heat. A service visit pumps the tank, washes the interior, restocks paper and adds deodoriser. Short events are delivered clean and collected after, with no mid event service unless requested.
Key numbers at a glance
| Item | Figure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Job site standard | Weekly | Up to about 10 workers per unit |
| Heavy use or heat | Twice weekly | More than 10 per unit, or summer |
| Tank capacity | 60 to 70 gallons | Roughly 100 uses |
| Single day event | Delivered clean, collected after | No mid event service by default |
| Multi day festival | Nightly | Serviced between sessions |
| Truck access needed | Within about 25 ft | A blocked unit still counts as a visit |
What does a service visit include?
Four things, in order. The holding tank is pumped out. The interior is washed down, including the seat, the walls and the floor. Consumables are restocked, meaning toilet paper and hand sanitiser. And fresh deodoriser is added to the tank.
The technician also checks the unit over and reports damage. On a long rental that is how vandalism and wear get picked up before they become your problem.
Why is weekly the default?
Because it matches the tank. A standard unit holds 60 to 70 gallons, which is roughly 100 uses. Ten workers over a five day week is about 100 uses, which is where both the weekly interval and the one unit per 10 workers ratio come from.
They are the same number approached from two directions, which is why the two rules of thumb fit together so neatly.
When does weekly stop being enough?
Two triggers. The first is usage: more than about 10 people per unit and the tank reaches its practical limit before the truck returns. The second is temperature. Sustained heat raises both fluid intake and odor, so a site that is comfortable on weekly service in April often needs twice weekly by July.
The symptom is consistent and easy to spot: units that are fine on Monday and avoided by Thursday. If crews are leaving site to find a restroom, the schedule is wrong rather than the count.
How does event servicing differ?
A single day event does not normally get serviced at all. Units arrive clean and fully stocked and are collected afterwards, which is sufficient for four to six hours at the correct unit count.
Events running longer than about eight hours are worth a mid event service, which has to be requested and scheduled. Multi day festivals are serviced nightly between sessions, which is standard practice rather than an upgrade.
What is the most common reason servicing fails?
Access. The truck needs to get within roughly 25 feet of the unit, and on an active site that gets harder as the build progresses. Units end up behind scaffolding, inside a fenced pour or beyond a stockpile.
A missed visit normally still counts as a billed visit, because the trip was made. Choosing a position at the outset that will still work in month three, and keeping the approach clear on service days, is the cheapest maintenance decision available.
Can you reduce cost by servicing less often?
Rarely in a way that works. Under-servicing produces units nobody will use, which on a job site means lost time and on an event means complaints.
The better lever is the unit count. More units at weekly servicing often costs less than fewer units at twice weekly, and it also removes the queue at the peak.

Questions
How often should a job site unit be serviced?
Weekly for up to about 10 workers per unit. Above that, or in sustained heat, twice weekly is what keeps the unit usable through the week.
What happens during a service visit?
The tank is pumped, the interior is washed down, the paper is restocked, deodoriser is added, and any damage is noted and reported.
How many uses does a unit hold between services?
Around 100 uses at a typical 60 to 70 gallon tank size. Past that the unit becomes unpleasant regardless of the schedule.
Will units be serviced during my event?
Not on a single day event unless you ask for it. Multi day events normally get nightly servicing between sessions.
Is extra servicing expensive?
Additional visits are billed per visit, and on a long rental an upgrade to twice weekly is usually cheaper than ad hoc calls.
What if the truck cannot reach the unit?
A missed visit normally still counts as a service visit. Keep the approach clear on service days, which is the most common avoidable cost on a long rental.
